The Tokyo Tech Scene: A Developer Perspective

Moving to Tokyo was one of the best decisions I've made. The city's blend of tradition and cutting-edge technology creates a unique environment for developers.

The Japanese Tech Industry

Japan's tech scene is often underestimated in the West. Companies like:

  • Sony - Still innovating in imaging and gaming

  • Rakuten - A tech powerhouse with 1.5B+ users

  • Mercari - Leading the二手 (secondhand) economy

  • Preferred Networks - Pushing AI boundaries
  • And startups are booming. The government is actively pushing for digital transformation.

    Work Culture

Unlike the stereotype, modern Japanese tech companies are adapting:

  • Work-life balance is improving, especially in startups

  • English is increasingly common, especially in foreign companies

  • Remote work became normalized post-COVID

  • Meritocracy is gaining ground over seniority-based promotion
  • What's Still Different

  • Meetings - More formal, often with detailed pre-materials

  • Documentation - Extremely thorough (sometimes too thorough)

  • Quality focus - Strong emphasis on stability and testing

  • Hierarchy - Still exists, but less rigid in tech
  • Job Market for Foreign Developers

    Good news:

  • Demand far exceeds supply for skilled engineers

  • English-friendly companies are common in Tokyo

  • Salaries are competitive (though not Silicon Valley level)

  • Visa sponsorship is relatively straightforward
  • Challenges:

  • Japanese language helps but isn't always required

  • Cultural fitting can be an adjustment

  • Big companies may still prefer Japanese-speaking candidates
  • Living in Tokyo as a Developer

The quality of life is exceptional:

  • Public transport is world-class

  • Food scene is incredible

  • Safety is outstanding

  • Tech meetups and communities are active
  • My Recommendation

If you're a developer interested in Asia, Tokyo is a fantastic choice. Start with English-friendly companies, learn Japanese gradually, and embrace the culture.

The combination of interesting work, great living conditions, and unique cultural experience makes it worth considering.
